Green Burials

There is increasing interest in green – or natural – burials in our culture today, as individuals become more and more aware and concerned about their environmental impact on our planet. For those who consciously choose to live a “green” life, it is natural to desire to be green in death as well. As traditional burial is extraordinarily resource intensive, and cremation, though not utilizing land and precious resources, is heavy in carbon gas emissions, there is an increased interest in green burial.

What is Green Burial?

  • Ecologically friendly, low environmental impact

  • Biodegradable caskets/shrouds or no casket

  • No embalmed bodies

  • No vaults

  • Nature setting without toxic landscaping practices

Green burial is, at its most ideal, Conservation Burial, which is an area of land protected in perpetuity as a natural habitat used for recreation and also used for burial, such as this one in Crestone, Colorado.

The Green Burial Council is the environmental certification organization setting the standard for green burial in North America. They offer environmental certificates for funeral homes, cemeteries and product manufacturers.  It is an independent, tax-exempt, non-profit organization working to encourage environmentally sustainable death care and the use of burial as a new means of protecting natural areas.
